Abstract

Abstract: This paper has attempted to document and analyse the material landscape of early medieval Rajpur which is located in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya in India. Through a systematic surface survey, the paper documented and mapped the material and structural remains of this site with an aim to understand its settlement patterns. By analysing the distribution of artefacts, especially pottery and architectural features have provided a comprehensive understanding of the historical landscape of Rajpur. In this paper also utilized the data pertaining to the pottery density and the density of other material remains to identify the habitation area within this fortified settlement. Also, the stylistic attributes of pottery have been explored for possible linkages across the Brahmaputra valley. Overall, this study explores the nature of settlement pattern at Rajpur during the early medieval period.
